It looks like there might be showers starting about 4pm. Everyone use your best judgment. If you don’t make it this week, just come next week. We might end up with too many teams, but you can rotate. I’m not super stressed about everyone following a strict schedule for these first couple of months of games. Everyone just come and meet folks and enjoy the lovely Park Blocks. If we do get rained out, we can also just redirect straight to Cafe Allora for a drink. Lots of options! Do as you see fit.

Remember: bocce balls can be found at StepChange Group at 500 NW 9th Ave. There are four sets. They should be returned after play. If StepChange is locked, leave them with Cafe Allora.

Take note: We’re bumping the time from a 5:30 start to 5:00.

Schedule for July & August

PAF bocce in the park blocksSo happy to report that we had an excellent turn-out at the Meet & Greet last Thursday. We had about 40 folks show up despite the chilly weather.

A couple of notes about games. There are four throws per side in a game, so if your team has more than four folks show up, captains will need to sort out how to rotate players in. A round consists of several games until one side reaches 12 points. We’ll need to keep games quick because there is another bocce league who plays at 6pm.

Team captains: please review the rules. I’ll come to the first month’s worth of games to make sure everyone knows how to play, but it would be nice for the captains to know them for the first game. http://www.bocce.com/rules-2/usbf-open-bocce-rules/

The courts may need to be groomed prior to play. There is a rake available at StepChange (500 NW 9th), just around the corner where you’ll go to get the balls also. If StepChange is locked up at 6:30 when you finish playing, please leave the balls at the restaurant next door, Cafe Allora.

The season starts this Thursday, June 24th with the first set of 8 teams. All total we have 32 teams! As we have so many teams that I’ve had to schedule the games so that each team plays once month. The schedule for the next two months follows.  We’ll play until the weather gets terrible again, likely into September.

Misto means “mixed” in Italian. I’m using it here to indicate when teams are composed of individuals from different companies or are freelancers. **I’ll send email to you guys who signed up as individuals and were assigned a team.

PAF Bocce has scheduled league games every Thursday at 5:30 in the North Park Blocks starting June 24. Learn how to play at our kickoff event June 10th.

PAF Bocce League Basics

Come bond with some of Portland’s smartest creatives and technophiles while having a few drinks and knocking each other’s balls around.

That’s right, bocce! Part bowling; part shuffleboard; part darts; mostly Italian – bocce is genetically engineered for hanging out.

Experience the thrill of bocce for yourself at the PAF bocce league inaugural/instructional open play session on June 10th at 5:30pm in the North Park Blocks between Glisan and Flanders. It’s absolutely free, with equipment provided by the Stepchange Group (corner of NW Glisan and 9th).

See you on the court.

About the PAF Bocce League

The PAF Bocce League is free and open to everyone. Our 6-week season begins June 24, with games every Thursday at 5:30pm.

About Bocce

Bocce (pronounced “bah-chee”) is so old, nobody can reliably tell you when exactly it started. The game is played by two teams attempting to get their balls closest to the target ball, called the “jack” or “pallino.” Points are awarded to one team per round, for each ball closer to the pallino than any opponent’s ball. The first team with 13 points wins.
